Ingredients

Dough;

  • ¾ cup warm milk regular or almond milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 ½ to 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 tbsp heavy whipping cream poured on top of rolls before baking

Filling:

  • ¾ cup chocolate hazelnut spread regular or sugar-free

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 2 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tbsp of sugar. Stir and set aside for 10 minutes until frothy. If the mixture doesn’t become frothy, start over with fresh yeast.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

  • Preheat your oven to 170°F or the warm setting.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, add 3 ½ cups of flour, melted butter, vanilla extract, and sugar.
  • With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour in the yeast mixture.
  • Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing until fully incorporated.
  • Increase the speed to medium (level 4) and knead for 5 minutes. The dough should be smooth and slightly elastic.
  • If kneading by hand, flour your surface and knead for about 6 minutes, adding a sprinkle of flour if too sticky (no more than ¼ cup additional flour).
  • Grease a bowl with oil, place the dough inside, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm area for 1 to 1 ½ hours or until doubled in size.

Step 3: Shape the Rolls

  • Once risen, sprinkle flour on a rolling surface and roll the dough into a 16×14-inch rectangle.
  • Spread the softened cream cheese evenly over the dough, then spread the chocolate hazelnut spread on top.
  • Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 12 equal slices.
  • Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, leaving about an inch between each roll. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Bake

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Pour ½ tbsp of heavy cream over each roll before baking.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly for 5 minutes.

Step 5: Make the Frosting

  • In a bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.
  • Mix in the melted butter and vanilla extract until creamy.
  • Spread over the warm hazelnut rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

Tips for Success

  • Make-Ahead Option: Prepare the dough the night before, cover tightly, and refrigerate. Let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before rolling.
  • Use Fresh Yeast: If your yeast doesn’t foam, it may be expired or inactive.
  • Adjust Sweetness: For a less sweet version, reduce the sugar in the dough or use sugar-free hazelnut spread.
