Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 packet sazon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp adobo
  • 1/4 tsp oregano
  • 2 tbsp sofrito
  • Diced onions & peppers
  • 1 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 3 ripe plantains
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Salt to taste
  • Cheese blend of choice

Instructions

Cook the Ground Beef

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with sazon, salt, garlic, adobo, oregano, sofrito, onions, peppers, and tomato sauce. Cook until the meat is fully browned and packed with flavor. This savory layer is what makes your pastelon so irresistible.

Prepare the Plantains

  • Peel and boil the ripe plantains until soft. Mash them with butter, water, and a pinch of salt until smooth and creamy. This sweet mash is the signature base of any good pastelon.

Layer the Pastelón

  • In a baking dish:
  • Start with a layer of ground beef
  • Add a layer of mashed plantains
  • Sprinkle cheese
  • Repeat layers
  • This layering technique gives your pastelon that classic lasagna-style structure.

Bake

  • Bake your pastelon at 375°F for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden.
